Month In Review: June 2008 (PART 2: ALBUMS & SONGS)

So this is the part where I start talking about the albums of the month. Lil' Wayne sold a million in a week... big fucking whoop. It's great to see a rapper sell that much in that amount of time and I wish my favorite rappers (ahem Talib, Nas, Com) were on the grind like him, but that's the only good thing I have to pull out from this event. What you fucking robot ass groupies don't realize is that sales will NEVER equal skills so get it right and pay some goddamn homage to the real MC's of yesterday and today, not this cough syrup drinking clown. With that said, its a shame that skills don't equal sales. Plies ol' fake ass dropped "Definition of Real" (yeah... Real Fake!) this month along with the long-awaited Three 6 Mafia album which ended up being the worst shit they put together. I'm always on old school and underground stuff but I got mad love for Three 6 and was purely disappointed in the product they put out. The mainstream ruins another group yet again *smh*. Now on to the good good:

The musical trio comprised of Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shae Haley, better known as N*E*R*D come together for their first album since 2004's "Fly or Die" with "Seeing Sounds." Though this album was probably the worst of the 3, the standout tracks really stand out. No pun intended. N*E*R*D is still better than half of the stuff out there so the album is still worth a listen. Check out "Anti Matter" "Love Bomb" "You Know What" and "Time For Some Action"

The Cool Kids- Bake Sale EP: Still in hate mode, it's pretty safe to say that if you've been following the Cool Kids since their appearance on that Rhapsody commercial you know you've heard many many copies of the same songs in all shitty sound quality. With a couple of minor beat changes, and a fully mastered sound, the Bake Sale EP is everything you know and love from Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish compiled into one retail CD for your listening enjoyment. My favorite joints are "88", "Mikey Rocks", and "What It Is"

Little Brother- ...And Justus For All: Two retail projects from LB in less than a year!? I must be dreaming! Unfortunately this is just a no DJ version of their collaborative free online project with Mick Boogie, but hey, I'll take what I can get. Little Brother re releases this joint in stores and throw in a few new joints. The mixtape itself was pretty dope (not to mention the fact that Phontigga and Big Pooh know how to rock a show!!!) but I'd much rather have a no DJ version of "Separate But Equal." But you can't always get what you want, and I've had to learn that the hard way. On all levels possible. Bangers on this album include "The Pressure", "Cross That Line (remix)", and "Time of Your Life"

On a side note, I apologize for this post being in hate mode. But I'm the person who either won't say anything at all, or say what needs to be said. No faking, fibbing, or lying comes from Faruq.

Month In Review: June 2008 (THE MIXTAPE EDITION)

June was a colossal month... I'm not even going to lie. I found (and listened to) a lot of new shit which is why I've gotta make a post for mixtapes and a post for albums.

Charles Hamilton- Crash Landed: Allow me to introduce to you my current favorite rapper; Charles Hamilton. Before I go on though, this guy has a serious obsession with Sonic the Hedgehog (hence the cover). Now that that's out of the way, this kid is fucking SERIOUS and I mean that in every which way possible. On the downside though, his voice can get annoying at times but the lyricism and the punchlines and the way dude just spazzes out on every track makes up for it. He also released "Outside Looking" with DJ Green Lantern which pretty much had the same tracks, but I couldn't find a good cover so I'm just reviewing this one haha. Highlights of the mixtape include "Superman", "November 10", "Unapologetic" and "Outside." "Death of the Mixtape Rapper" coming soon!

Next up is Immortal Technique's mixtape album/3rd in-store musical offering "The 3rd World." I didn't like Immortal Technique until seeing him perform live at last year's Rock The Bells (which he's coming back for) but this release definitely another one to add to the list of how great 2008 has been. Tech never disappoints, going hard on "The 3rd World", "Crimes of the Heart" and "Parole"

Nas- The Nigger Tape: DJ Green Lantern was doing the damn thing in June wasn't he?! His last entry for this blog post ends with this though haha. Nas is my favorite rapper, so naturally I'm going to be biased, but obviously he doesn't disappoint. What's even better is that only 3 tracks featured on this tape will be on the album. For those that have slept on this but are anticipating the album which drops July 15, put this in the CD player or mp3 player and it will hold you down 'til then. Top tracks are "N.I.G.G.E.R.", "Cops Keep Firing", and "Association". Don't forget JULY 15 "UNTITLED" IS IN STORES!

Wale- The Mixtape About Nothing: Slap me with a late pass again, but it dropped May 30th which was too late to be considered in last month's post, so fuck it haha. Wale is another dude who is creating a huge ass buzz and I can hope for nothing but the best for this DC native. He too hardly disappoints on his mixtapes. Let's just hope that he stays true to what has got him this far when he [god willing] drops that album on Interscope. Not really much to say about this one outside of telling you to go listen to it. Check out "The Perfect Plan", "The Kramer", and "The Artistic Integrity."

Asher Roth- The Greenhouse Effect: LMFAO Asher Roth is fucking hilarious. Now if you have ever heard me talk on-air, you should know how I emphasize the first rule of music which is to have fun. This guy takes my rule and rolllllls with it. He's kinda like Afroman meets Charles Hamilton embodied in a white guy who sounds like Eminem (if that even makes any sense). Though mad people have hated the fact that everyone jumped on the beat for "A Milli", "Roc Boys" freestyles have been going under the radar, as I have heard quite a few myself with Asher being one of the culprits (add Wale to that too). But like I said, dude is funny as fuck with his songs about sex and titties. He even raps on John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change!" Regardless, this is some fun summer music. "Just Listen" is one of the best verses I've heard all year and tracks like "Cannon!!" and "Black Mags" are worth checking out.

On to part 2 of this post for albums and tracks!

Month in Review: May 2008

On a personal level, May was a pretty good month. On a music level... ehh not so much haha. Mainstream wise, there wasn't shit outside of Bun B's "II Trill" which is straight ass cheeks compared to "Trill" from 2005. On the under the radar type level though, shit was on and poppin'. Check my 5 picks for May 2008 below and top 10 tracks of the month are now up for download! And a happy belated birthday goes out to myself. I'm 19 BITCH!

7L & Esoteric- Esoteric vs. Japan: I can't say that I've listened to a 7L and Esoteric album from start to finish in one shot until this. I've heard "Dangerous Connection" and Esoteric's "Too Much Posse" all jumbled up at random times and liked what I heard. When I heard "God Less America" last month, I knew that this album couldn't disappoint. And I was right. 7L is a super slept on producer and althought Esoteric's vibe is an acquired taste, dude is sick too. Naturally, the whole album as that whole Japanese vibe, with both Jap raps, quotes, samples, and skits. Check out "God Less America," "Real Rap Design," and "Mecha Mecha."

J-Live- Then What Happened?: Can't say I've heard of J-Live until I saw the cover for this joint on Poisonous Paragraphs. And because that blog is so dope (big ups to Dart Adams), I know I had to peep as soon as I got my hands on it. I fucking loved it. J-Live gives off the perfect vibe when it comes to what I want to see in an album and in an MC (even though he's not the super epitome of one). Beats are oh so dope, flow is on point, and the lyrics are there too. Dude even gets a guest spot from De La's Plugg One aka Posdnuos. Please do the world a favor and give this a spin or two. As a sampler, check out "The Understanding," "Ooweee," and "The Upgrade."

Next up is Kidz In The Hall's "The In Crowd." Having KitH signing to Duck Down was probably some of the greatest news I heard this year, and the album shows it. Although they promoted the shit out of "Drivin' Down the Block" til it made its way to #6 on MTV's TRL (fuck Viacom, btw) I hoped that this album was not one of those "dope-underground-artists-try-to-go-pop-by-switching-their-style-up-
and-making-a-frisbee-instead-of-an-album" type joints. MC Naledge and Producer Double-O did a good job in covering it up, but there were a few hints and vibes here and there that they want fame. On the plus side however, you can witness the growth both on the vocals and production side in comparison to "School Was My Hustle" which made this album that much more better. The year is only 5/12 of the way done, but this has the potential to make my top 10 list. I sincerely doubt it though. Regardless, Naledge spits that heat on "Inner Me" which for sure can earn a top 10 song spot for '08. Outside of "Inner Me," check "Black Out" and "The Pledge." At least Duck Down put out a non-grimey album with mainstream appeal! Haha.

Elzhi (of Slum Village fame)- Euro Pass: When first hearing about this, I thought it was some random CD that was being sold on tour or a complation of live tracks or something but it ended up being a solo LP that is straight up BANGING. I never realized how long I've been listening to Slum Village and how much I love them until I heard this joint. Unfortunately there is no Dilla production on here *sobs* but Black Milk comes with the heat (as always) along with additional beats provided by DJ Dez, Denmark Vessey, Leef Mayfield, and fellow S-Villa member T3. Not much to say about this album, but check it out for yourself. Top joints: "Mowtown 25,""That's That One," and "Talkin In My Sleep."

And last, but not least is Santogold's self titled album, "Santogold." Alright, alright go ahead and hit me with the late pass but this is too amazing on a musical level for me not to blog about it. I feel really stupid for not immediately jumping on the bandwagon the way a lot of others did. When it comes to us underground heads having a general consensus on a non hiphop act, it's always for a good reason, and this artist right here is a prime example. Bringing in a mix of almost everything (but heavily influenced by New Wave and Reggae Dub), many compare her to M.I.A. I personally don't really see the comparison. M.IA.'s "Kala" was a bunch of noise that not even my Indian bias could help me like. Santogold on the other hand made a close to flawless album that I'm telling all of my friends about. And to top it all off, she's coming down to Miami for Rock The Bells! Though you should check out the whole album, the bums can sample this by listening to "Lights Out," "Shove It," and the lead single "L.E.S. Artistes."

Saigon and Just Blaze Leave Atlantic!

Now about a week or two back on the show, I brought up the topic of Jean Grae quitting rap and also barely grazed Saigon's situation. I remember dude talking about how he was done with rap and blah blah blah (which was actually a stunt that he pulled to try and get released) but then I heard him on "Criminal" with The Roots last month and knew ol Saigitty was back (not like he was gone or anything, but still). Well according to both his and Just Blaze's blogs, "Greatest Story Never Told" might just drop a few months before February 31, Two Thousand Never [end sarcasm]. Two new Saigon tracks after the read.

Saigon

"Now to bring you all up to date...I am NO LONGER ON ATLANTIC RECORDS, thank you God. I took legal action and got my manager Chris, my lawyer Theo, my homies Gee Roberson and Just Blaze and we got the fuck up out of there... No, I didnt get dropped so you haters dont get excited, I fought these people very very hard to leave. When they drop you they keep your music and you dont have to pay them shit back.. Trust me, I tried to get dropped. I still own my masters so we have to give these bastards a whole LOT of money , BUT, we still own The Greatest Story Never Told which will be released this year with a company that Im sure will surprise the whole world once we let it out.. Nobody is gonna see this coming..TRUST ME. Im still rocking with Just Blaze till the dirt, Im still with Hip Hop Since 1978 till the dirt, we killed them with Kanye West, now we bout to kill em with Lil Wayne and Saigon comes soon after to play clean up.....Goodbye Atlantic Records, I dont know if it was systematic racism or the fact they didnt think they could break an artist with validity in his music who cares about the future of black children, but I guess we'll never know will we.....................???????????? So now you know why Ive been quiet the past year.. Ive been in battle with these people, and I WON.

Now check out my single Gotta Believe It...The one explaining my new beginning.....Peace.. Im off to China for Memorial Day weekend...Wow. Later Yall"

Just Blaze

"We have been quietly working to get released from Atlantic.

Sometimes you need to do things without talking about them. And get what you want.

We finally got that…

With 100% ownership of the masters.

(Most folks who claim they own their masters when they get released may have them (or copies of them) in their possesion, but they don’t own them, so they can mixtape stuff all day, but can’t go on and ever offically release them… we are free to take them wherever we like, however we like )

((Most folks that get a release granted don’t even get their masters period and whatever label they DO end up on will have to buy them from the previous label, plus all types of overrides and fees))

Thank you Atlantic for recognizing the situation for what it really was and doing the right thing.

There are already new situation(s) in the works.

More to come.

(I’m not going Strictly Business- style on this one right now. I have too much going on in Real Life County)

Oh yeah I didn’t forget my promise.

I’m just 4 or 5 weeks late on it.

Had to work out the release first.

Here you go."

And without any further hesitation,
Saigon- Believe It

and

Saigon- Shot In The Booty

Is that Just Blaze on the vocoder on "Believe It"?! Anywho, just click on the joints to open up the zshare. You know how I do.

Mickey Factz - The Leak #20 & #21

Alright, so as promised, I was gonna hook you all up with the "Live Water" track that I played, but I got an email for this week's edition of "The Leak" so I'll throw that in there too.

"So this week I decided to smooth things out a bit and talk about an old relationship I was in. I loved the girl and I was still feeling a certain way about her so I felt like I needed to write about it. I heard this track from Ms. Hill and decided to build on it. Every word in the song is true. We're still friends to this day. So without further ado I present Live Water Featuring Lauryn Hill. Download below."

http://sharebee.com/6dc09f38

"As we approach memorial day weekend, I figured I do a lil history lesson about the almighty dollar. This is an old track I did over 9th wonder production and I felt it hasn't gotten the proper attention it rightfully deserves. What better way then to include it on The Leak. Nevertheless, whether its a year old, a week old or a decade old, this is a timeless track. I present good money."

http://sharebee.com/fe7df567

(For those who aren't familiar with 9th's Production, original beat is called "Dolla Circulate" and Big Cas had "Dolla Dolla" over it)

ENJOY!

Best of April 2008

As usual, my brown ass is late on yet another post haha... but what else is new? I shouldn't really have any excuse. Just gotta get started on my blogging grind. So as promised, here are the best 5 albums and/or mixtapes from April '08. ENJOY!

Atmosphere- When Life Gives You Lemons, Paint That Shit Gold: The duo of Ant and Slug, better known as Atmosphere, drop their 6th studio album. I never really used to listen to Atmosphere until a friend put me on to 'em. From there I listened to "A Tribute to Lisa Bone"t (because I'm a Murs fan), "God Loves Ugly", and "Strictly Leakage", all of which I loved. With that in mind, I knew that "When Life Gives You Lemons" wouldn't disappoint. And it didn't. Check out "Like the Rest of Us", "Dreamer", and "Shoulda Known".

Buckshot & 9th Wonder- The Formula: Following up to 2005's "Chemistry", 9th and the BDI Thug are back at it again with "The Formula". Featuring guest spots from Talib Kweli, Arafat Yates, and Big Chops, the chemistry (no pun intended) between this MC + Producer duo is by far one of the greatest to witness (with your ears of course) in HipHop today. Be sure to check out "Hold It Down", "Whassup With U?", "Intro (The Formula)", and "Ready (Brand New Day)".

The Roots- Rising Down: With joints such as "75 Bars (Black's Reconstruction)", "Get Busy", and "Rising Up" hitting the Internet maybe a month or so ago, the hype for this album was definitely up there. And boy did the 5th Dynasty Crew deliver. Featuring Malik B, Dice Raw, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Styles P, Porn, Truck North, Saigon, Peedi Peedi and Wale. Besides the above mentioned tracks, be sure to check out "Rising Down", "Criminal", and "I Will Not Apologize."

J Heat & Blu- (So)ul Amazing: Though this is more like a compilation of songs from Blu both pre and post "Below the Heavens", it is somewhat of a good starting point for those who aren't too familiar with one of the underground's heavy hitters whose fanbase is growing exponentially.

Hasan Insane & JayZ- Black Caesar: OH. MY. GOD. This is probably the best American Gangster remix album that I've heard. And I've heard a good 10-15 versions too. Beats are dope, blended verses were perfectly placed... GO CHECK IT OUT!

Other Ish To Listen To:
Jay Electronica - What The F*ck Is A Jay Electronica
W.A.L.E. Collected & Compiled
Andre 3000- Alter Ego The Mixtape (Presented By Trapaholics)
The Cool Kidz- Cool Ass Ninjas
